Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included due to injury, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the summer tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

Following facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with the coach opting against calling up the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield choices. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in Ireland A's loss by England in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain should the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
