Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Assault Dies
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response when she finished her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", and said some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many co-workers use transit services, ride the tramline... our security is compromised fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Another individual, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came the city fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She lacks transportation employed at major concert locations... and to think a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
