Wonder Man Preview Reveals The MCU's Most Self-Referential TV Show Ever

Marvel is aware that audiences could be experiencing some superhero exhaustion, so they've opted to incorporate that very idea into their next superhero series.

That's right, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer, which premiered on October 10th, also subtly moved the Wonder Man launch date later from its original end of 2025 slot into January 2026.

Why another superhero film? Everyone is weary of superhero content. Why watch them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the entire category of storytelling.

The interviewer replies: "Have you considered about the cast?"

The preview then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the conversation on his mobile device, and the trailer concludes.

What We Know About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).

The supporting cast features actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed coming back as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.

The Studio's Self-Referential Comedy Approach

We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's evident that Marvel intends to laugh at its own tropes.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the studio is fully committed on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
